GWO Module 1: Crane and Hoist Basic User

  • This course teaches wind industry personnel how to safely use small, fixed cranes and hoists commonly found on wind turbines, both onshore and offshore. Through theory and hands-on practice, you’ll learn safe operation, basic inspection, and how to follow manufacturer manuals and legal requirements during service work. After completing the course, you’ll be qualified as a basic user to perform basic lifts with fixed cranes and hoists in wind turbine environments.

  • Overview

    This GWO crane and hoist training course aims to equip participants in the wind industry to safely operate, inspect, and maintain small, fixed cranes and hoists by following manufacturer manuals and relevant laws. Through both theoretical and practical training, participants will gain safety awareness and the skills needed to operate these cranes and hoists onshore and offshore. Upon completion, participants will be able to responsibly and safely perform basic lifts in wind turbine environments.

    Course Objectives

    After completing this course, participants will be able to:

    • Understand what is expected of them during the course.
    • Take charge of their own safety and learning.
    • Identify local emergency procedures and facilities.
    • Discuss human factors and their effects.
    • Find and use relevant laws and documents for lifting operations.
    • Explain a basic lifting plan, including risks and actions, to others.
    • Apply a lifting plan to a basic operation.
    • Explain how to handle mechanical, chemical, hydraulic, and electrical risks safely.
    • Identify different types of lifting equipment and their main parts.
    • Understand how lifting equipment works.
    • Recognize and use different lifting accessories safely.
    • Choose the right accessories for lifting and check their certification.
    • Apply theoretical knowledge to real lifting operations.
    • Prepare safely for lifting with fixed cranes and hoists.
    • Inspect and set up cranes and hoists before use.
    • Follow laws, instructions, and plans for safe operation.
    • Follow signals and communication from the slinger signaller/banksman.
    • Safely park and shut down equipment after use.
    • Charge the remote controller independently.
    • Report any equipment defects.

    Who Should Enroll

    This course is suitable for individuals who work in the wind industry conducting pre-planned basic lifting operations onshore and offshore, using common types of cranes and hoists and following established procedures.

    Certification

    Certificate will be issued by the Global Wind Organization (GWO). It will be valid for 2 years from date of issue, after which a refresher training will be required.

    Participants Prerequisites

    • Participants must be physically fit and capable of participating in moderately strenuous practical activities.
    • Participants must adhere to the Drug and Alcohol Policy.
    • Participants are required to wear long pants and safety boots for the training

    Course Inclusions (for trainings held at 3M):

    • Basic Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as safety helmets, safety glasses, coveralls, and gloves will be provided during practical training
    • Meals are provided daily, including lunch and two coffee breaks

    Class Size:

    • Theory Sessions: 1 instructor for every 12 students
    • Practical Sessions: 2 instructors for every 12 students
